Custom Scan: an in-house investigation, tailored to your question

The three standard scans (Persona, Team, Maturity) cover the most frequently requested research questions regarding AI adoption. However, sometimes none of them fit exactly, or you want to measure something that is deeper, broader, or more sector-specific.

A Custom Scan is not a fixed product. It is a framework in which we design a tailor-made study together with you: specific items, dimensions, and analysis. We use the scientific basis of our standard scans as a foundation, ensuring the outcome remains defensible. The scope, target group, and research questions are followed exactly as you desire.

What is the AI Custom Scan?

A Custom Scan is a tailored assessment designed around a specific question or context. We use the scientific foundation of our three standard scans (on technology acceptance, technology adoption, and organizational maturity) as a basis, and build upon this to create a questionnaire, dimension set, and analysis that fits your specific issue.

The Custom Scan has two common forms of application. The first is a sector or domain scan: for example, an AI maturity assessment tailored to the specific challenges in healthcare, education, or government, with sector-specific benchmarks. The second is an issue scan: an assessment centered on a concrete theme (for example, AI safety in a supply chain setting, or the impact of AI on a specific professional group).

Custom designed

Questions, dimensions, and target audience are determined together with you. We start from your specific issue and build the instrument around it, rather than imposing an existing instrument onto your context.

Scientifically substantiated

We reuse validated measurement layers from our three standard scans and from additional scientific research. As a result, the outcome is not only recognizable but also defensible to the board, council, or supervisory authority.

Action-oriented

A Custom Scan does not end with a report, but with a set of concrete priorities. We design the research so that the outcome is directly usable for your next step, whether that involves policy, training, governance, or strategy.

When is a Custom Scan suitable?

The three standard scans cover the vast majority of research questions regarding AI adoption. A Custom Scan comes into play when the standard approach does not fit, or does not fit entirely. Below are a number of situations in which a Custom Scan is often the right form.

Sector-specific issues

For example, an AI maturity assessment in the healthcare sector, with dimensions regarding patient safety, professional secrecy, and chain collaboration. Or an assessment in education, with a focus on academic integrity and assessment practices. The pillars remain scientifically substantiated but are given sector-specific substance.

Specific target group

For example, a survey among supply chain partners, external parties, or customers, instead of internal employees. Or a study focused solely on a specific management team, department, or job group. The method remains the same, but the communication and sample are tailored to the target group.

Specific issue within an AI context

For example, a measurement of willingness to change regarding a specific AI system going live. Or a study into the impact of AI on a professional group, with a combination of quantitative and qualitative elements. We design the instrument around the theme, not the other way around.

Tailored administrative accountability

For example, a study for the Supervisory Board, for an audit, or for external accountability. The outcome must not only be substantively correct but also defensible to third parties. We design the scan with that defensibility as a design criterion.

How a Custom Scan is created

A Custom Scan always begins with a conversation, not a quotation. Only when we have jointly determined what is actually at stake do we design the research. That design is always transparent: you see what we ask, why, and how we will analyze it, before the scan goes into execution.

Exploratory conversation

First, we clarify what the actual question is. Often, someone comes in saying, “we want to measure something about AI at our company,” when the real question is more precise than that. This conversation typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes and is free of charge.

Design and quotation

We draw up a research design including scope, target group, items, dimensions, analysis approach, and turnaround time. The scientific substantiation is made explicit. The scan is only carried out after approval of the design.

Execution

The scan itself follows similar steps to our standard scans: data collection, optional in-depth interviews, and analysis. We coordinate regularly during the execution so that you are not faced with any surprises.

Feedback and ownership

We present the findings to those ultimately responsible. With a Custom Scan, we invest extra in handover: not only what the figures say, but also how you can work with the outcome yourselves. The report concludes with concrete priorities.

Who is the scan intended for?

The AI Maturity Scan is methodologically identical for all organization types. We tailor the sample and respondent circle to your size and context. The pillars and workflows remain the same, ensuring the outcome is comparable across organizations.

zorg-ziekenhuis-500

AI maturity in a hospital

A Maturity Scan approach, but with dimensions regarding patient safety, professional secrecy, and collaboration with the medical staff. Customized benchmarks per professional group (physicians, nurses, support staff). Result: a roadmap supported by the Board of Directors.

onderwijs-docenten-studenten-500

AI awareness among teachers and students

A Persona and Team Scan approach, spread across two groups simultaneously. Focus on academic integrity, assessment practices, and the difference between ChatGPT usage in education versus research. Result: an educational policy AI that was supported by both groups.

overheid-gemeente-500

Literacy assessment for a municipality

A Team Scan approach, with additional questions regarding GDPR, the EU AI Act, and political-administrative sensitivity. In-depth interviews with key figures in four domains (social, spatial, support, and administrative). Result: a literacy plan for the Municipal Executive.

ai-systeem-uitrol-500

Willingness to change regarding a concrete AI system

Prior to the rollout of an AI system in an operational work environment: a measurement of expectations, concerns, and needs among the user group. Supplementing the standard Team Scan dimensions, with scenario questions regarding the specific system. Result: a go/no-go decision based on facts rather than intuition.

ketenscan-500

AI maturity in a supply chain

Not the individual organization, but a chain of four collaborating parties. The Maturity Scan pillars have been adapted for inter-organizational collaboration, with explicit attention to data exchange, cross-party governance, and shared risks. The result: a joint improvement agenda across the chain.

herhaalmeting-500

A second measurement after active intervention

At an organization that had conducted a standard Maturity Scan a year earlier and had implemented active policies in the meantime: a modified repeat assessment with in-depth items on the three identified priorities. Result: evidence of progress plus clear identification of the work that remains to be done.

Custom scan or a standard scan?

The short answer: choose a standard scan if your question fits well within our existing approach. That is usually the best option, because standard scans are validated, comparable across organizations, and faster to deliver. Choose a Custom Scan only if the standard scan really does not fit.

For a Custom Scan, you invest more time in the design upfront, and the turnaround time is longer than for a standard scan. You receive a solution that is perfectly suited to your context, with broader benchmarking capabilities within your sector once we have built up that data.

When to choose which one

Choose a standard scan if:

  • You want to know who your employees are personally around AI → Persona Scan
  • You want to know what your employees do with AI in their work → Team Scan
  • You want to know where the organization stands as a whole → Maturity Scan
  • You want speed, comparability, and a quick startup → standard scan

Choose a Custom Scan if:

  • Your sector has characteristics that do not fit within our standard pillars.
  • The target group is not one's own organization, but for example a chain or customer group.
  • The issue revolves around a concrete AI system, an audit, or a specific compliance question.
  • You want a repeat measurement with adjustments compared to a previous measurement.

Schedule an introductory meeting

An introductory meeting lasts 30 to 45 minutes and is always without obligation. We discuss your context and the issues currently at play, and we indicate whether a Maturity Scan is appropriate, whether a Team Scan is better suited, or whether another approach would yield more value.

You don't need to prepare anything in advance. An open conversation often yields more than a tightly scheduled agenda.
